5 min read

Better sleep starts with your mattress

A good night's sleep shapes how you feel, think and move the next day. Your routine matters, and so does the surface you sleep on every night. A mattress that fits your body and sleep style can ease pressure points, keep your spine aligned and help you stay comfortably cool.

At Under the Roof Furniture, we help families across Waynesboro, Charlottesville, Staunton and Harrisonburg find the mattress that fits the way they sleep. Below is a guide to each type of mattress in our showroom, how to choose, and the everyday habits that lead to better rest.

Organic Latex: natural support, top to bottom

An all-latex mattress gives buoyant, responsive support that cradles pressure points and keeps your spine aligned. Our emBrace Sleep collection is built from natural latex in every layer.

  • Certified organic: GOLS certified organic natural latex

  • Cleaner air: GREENGUARD Gold certified, with no fiberglass or toxic chemical flame retardants

  • Targeted support: a natural latex core between 5-zone latex layers that support each part of your body

  • Cooler sleep: vented airflow channels run through the latex for breathability

  • Lasting value: 15-year warranty

Best for: sleepers who want natural materials, pressure relief and a responsive feel that makes it easy to change positions.

Organic Latex Hybrid: natural comfort with classic coil support

A latex hybrid layers natural comfort materials over individually wrapped coils. You get the cushioning of latex with the familiar bounce and strong edges of an innerspring. Our Harvest Green collection is handmade with organic latex, organic wool and organic cotton.

  • Certified natural materials: GOLS certified organic latex and GREENGUARD Gold certified construction

  • Temperature control: organic wool breathes, wicks moisture and helps your body stay at a comfortable temperature

  • Allergy friendly: wool is naturally antimicrobial and resists dust mites

  • Zoned coils: coils placed in support zones keep your spine aligned and help prevent the feeling of rolling off the edge

  • Fewer adhesives: hand tufting with organic wool holds the layers in place instead of chemical glues

  • Lasting value: 25-year limited warranty

Coil-on-Coil: classic luxury and deep support

A coil-on-coil mattress stacks two coil systems for a traditional, supportive feel with plenty of airflow. Our Eastman House Heritage collection offers this construction with a cushioned Euro top, handcrafted in the USA.

  • Two layers of coils: a dual coil system gives responsive support, and individually wrapped coils keep a partner's movement from waking you

  • Back support: chiropractor-approved support with a reinforced center for spinal alignment

  • Pressure relief: a quilted Euro top cushions shoulders and hips

  • Strong edges: reinforced edge support lets you use the full surface and sit on the side to get up

  • Adjustable base friendly

The Heritage Luxe adds copper-infused foam that wicks moisture, regulates temperature and contours to relieve pressure points. It is OEKO-TEX certified, made with no fiberglass, carries a 15-year warranty and comes in five comfort levels, from softest to extra firm.

Best for: couples, sleepers who love a traditional innerspring feel, and anyone who wants firm edge support.

Cooling All-Foam: contouring comfort, motion stays put

An all-foam mattress contours closely to your body and absorbs movement. Our Skia mattress uses layers of memory foam with cooling technology, made in the USA and fiberglass free.

  • Even pressure distribution: memory foams spread your weight to ease pressure on hips and shoulders

  • Undisturbed sleep: foam absorbs motion, so you feel less of a partner's movement

  • Cool, dry comfort: cooling technology helps release heat through the night

  • Support for every body: designed to support a range of sizes and weights

Best for: light sleepers, couples with different schedules, and anyone who loves a hugging, contoured feel.

The best test is your own body. Lie on each mattress for several minutes in the position you sleep in most. Bring your partner so you can feel how the mattress handles two people.

10 simple tips for better sleep

Small, steady habits make the biggest difference. Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep a night, and these tips help you get the most from them.

  1. Keep a steady schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, weekends included. Your body clock settles into the rhythm.

  2. Keep your bedroom cool. A room in the mid-60s Fahrenheit suits most people. Breathable bedding and natural materials help too.

  3. Make it dark and quiet. Blackout curtains, a sleep mask or a white noise machine can block out light and sound.

  4. Set screens aside. Put phones, tablets and the TV away about an hour before bed. Their light can keep your mind alert.

  5. Get morning daylight. Time outside early in the day helps set your natural sleep and wake cycle.

  6. Watch caffeine and alcohol. Enjoy coffee earlier in the day. Alcohol may make you drowsy, yet it often leads to lighter, broken sleep.

  7. Move during the day. Regular activity helps you fall asleep faster. Finish hard workouts a few hours before bedtime.

  8. Build a wind-down routine. Reading, gentle stretching or a warm bath signals your body that it is time to rest.

  9. Choose the right pillow. Side sleepers do well with a thicker pillow, back sleepers with medium loft, and stomach sleepers with a thin one.

  10. Know when to replace your mattress. Sagging, new aches in the morning or sleeping better away from home are signs it is time. Many sleep experts suggest a new mattress every 7 to 10 years.

If you still have trouble sleeping after making these changes, talk with your doctor.
